The WoodpileGiving Something Back - A Community Appreciation Event Sponsored by: Landmark Engineering, Inc.The Woodpile is a free children's activity sponsored by Landmark Engineering to acknowledge the natural curiosity of children to build, and to promote a career in engineering as an outlet for that interest.Presently held in late September in Newark at Newark Community Days on the U of D mall since 1987, in Dover at Old Old Dover Days in early May starting in 1997, and sometimes at additional locations on request. The Woodpile allows children to build sculptures from scrap wood and glue. Estimates of a thousand kids per day go through the process, completing some 500 sculptures. An American Society of Civil Engineers coloring book about Civil Engineering, a listing of area colleges with engineering programs, stickers proclaiming the participant is a "Landmark Engineering Junior Engineer", and information on Landmark Engineering are available.Open to all who are interested, the intent of the event is to say thanks to the community and to encourage kids and their parents to consider engineering as a career. Perhaps someday we'll see some of these kids in the building industry because of our efforts! This event is now being co-sponsored by the Delaware Architectural Foundation (DAF). |
